Good morning, Singers! We have a wonderful Spring filled with singing and can't wait to share it all with you.
We are back at the Guthrie this week. Thank you MacPhail for sharing Antonello Hall with us. What a gorgeous place to rehearse! You are true community partners and we are so grateful to you and to the Guthrie for allowing us to sing in your wonderful spaces.
We will be rehearsing on Saturday, April 27th, 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor of the Guthrie. We have a concert in Loring Park in a few weeks and will be rehearsing our music and, of course, many other songs. You won't want to miss the community, the JD and Fred stories, the laughs, and the shared experiences.
Here is our schedule through the end of May.
April 27th--2:00-3:30, Guthrie, 8th floor
May 4th--2:00-3:30, Guthrie, 8th floor
May 11th--2:00, Loring Park
May 18th--no rehearsal
May 25th--2:00-3:30, Guthrie, 8th floor
It's easy, just come and get ready to leave with Spring in your heart and in your step!!

Good morning, Singers. Oh, what a night! It was a perfect night of singing and community and to all of you who braved the weather, once the singing began, what weather? No one noticed how lousy it was outside because the joy, the music, and the community was rocking. Thank you, thank you for another wonderful night.
We will be rehearsing on Saturday, April 20th, 2:00-3:00 at MacPhail Center for Music at 501 South 2nd St. in Antonello Hall. It is a gorgeous place to rehearse and we are so thankful to MacPhail for helping us these past 2 weeks when our rehearsal rooms at the Guthrie were being used. Don't miss the chance to sing in this beautiful setting.
All you need to do is come! That's the extent of how complicated it is to be able to make music with us.
Just come!
Claudia
Just a few more days until we sing at the Capri Theater on Tuesday, April 16 (2027 West Broadway). Rehearsal have been great fun and those of us who have had this experience know that a great time will be had by all.
Please dress in bright colors and plan to be at the Capri in the Paradise Room at 5-5:30. The Capri has asked that we find street parking if possible in order to save the small parking lot for our audience. We will be singing 'What is this", 'If you want the world to be a better place", and the Sergio Mendes song, 'Funky Bahia' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4lnhtyHET8). We have sung these songs together many times and JD will make sure we all have a wonderful time.
See you all there. Get ready for a fun evening of singing and community.
Claudia
Good morning, Singers. I hope this email finds you enjoying this gorgeous day.
We have a wonderful schedule ahead of us and I hope you can all join us. On Saturday, April 13th, we will be rehearsing on the second floor of MacPhail Center for Music at 501 South 2nd St in Antonello Hall. It is a beautiful place to rehearse and we are so thankful that MacPhail is our community partner.
On Tuesday, April 16th, we will be the opening act at the Capri Theater at 2027 West Broadway. The MacPhail Community Youth Choir and the Capri Glee will also be performing. It's an incredible evening of amazing music with an enthusiastic audience. JD had suggested we arrive between 5 and 5:30 as parking is at a premium. Please wear bright colors and come ready for a wonderful evening.
Can't wait for the next week of music and community!
Claudia

Please send me your letters of support for JD for the McKnight Distinguished Artist award. I need them this week and really appreciate your support, as does JD.
Thank you for all you do to make the Singers the dynamic group we are.
Good morning, Singers! I hope this email finds you off to a great start to your Wednesday. The Singers have certainly begun this part of our season with a bang. As of today, we have added 18 new singers who have all jumped in and become part of our community in just a few weeks. Welcome and thank you!!
We will be rehearsing on Saturday, March 23rd at 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor of the Guthrie. Next week will be a week off for those of us who celebrate Easter, and we will be right back on April 6th.
Don't miss even one minute of singing with us. It's too much fun to miss and I guarantee you will leave feeling refreshed and happier than you were when you came in, and I come to rehearsal pretty happy, so it's quite a guarantee!
Thank you for everything you are doing to make us the Singers!
Claudia
Good morning, Singers. We are having the BEST time singing together. There are many new singers, and when we all come together, we have so much fun. Our next rehearsal is on Saturday, March 16th, 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor of the Guthrie. You want to come . . .you know you do!!
I am working on finishing the nomination for JD for the McKnight Distinguished Artist Award. There is a space for letters of support and I hope we can max out that part of the nomination. Please write your thoughts and feelings about JD and send them to me at cjkittock@gmail.com. I need these letters before April 1. He is so very deserving of this award. This is part of the description. "The annual $100,000 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award recognizes artists and culture bearers who have made a lifelong commitment to creating art that is locally, regionally, and/or nationally significant. These artists and culture bearers have chosen to make their lives and careers in Minnesota, thereby making our state a more culturally rich place. First and foremost, they have produced creatively incisive art reflecting their particular and extraordinary point of view." It fits him perfectly, doesn't it?
Thank you for all you are doing to make the Singers the wonderful group it is. It IS that because of you, and I am forever thankful.
Claudia
Good morning, Singers. If you missed last Saturday's rehearsal, you missed 90 minutes of pure joy. We had a large contingent of singers in attendance and it showed up in the singing and in the spirit of the songs we were singing. We will be rehearsing this week on Saturday, March 9th, 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor of the Guthrie.

Good morning, Singers. I hope this email finds you well and looking forward to our next rehearsal on March 2nd. While it seems a long way off, there are many things to do between now and then.
Look for an email very soon about the "Be That Neighbor Challenge". In this world where every news story seems to be tragic and incredibly negative, good things continue to happen every day. We will be inviting you to share those small, every day good things. More about that very soon.
If the cold is getting to you, JD will be at the Dakota tonight in Larry Long's American Roots Revue. He is stepping in for Tonia Hughes and it will be an amazing evening. Go to https://www.dakotacooks.com/event/american-roots-revue-2-2/
On February 4th, Fred and Jearlyn will be in concert at the Dakota. You can find ticket information at https://www.dakotacooks.com/event/jearlyn-fred-steele-24/
On February 16-18, there will be an incredible presentation, called, "The Sound of Gospel" at the Gooddale Theater in the Cowles Center in downtown Minneapolis. This is the second year of this stellar program, and with Jevetta Steele directing, you know it will be worth your time. I went last year and left feeling empowered and joyful.
While we wait for the return of the Singers, continue to sing every day and find those moments of joy to keep you going through the winter. We are stronger together and when we resume in March, we will be ready!
Thank you for all you do---Claudia
We are so very grateful
Be That Neighbor exists to create connections between people, to create a community where we know people, where we share concerns, where we find commonality, where we can laugh together, make music together, exercise together, share art together, and help each other when help is needed. We know that we are stronger together, but we exist to build that together, to provide opportunities for people to find their village. We believe that being a neighbor has nothing to do with geography and everything to do with morality.
Every person on this list helped us by donating money so that we could do the work we do. Every person on this list made us stronger. Every person on this list is a friend, a neighbor, and someone that is part of building the world we all want to inhabit. Thank you!

As 2023 comes to an end, Be That Neighbor has so very much to celebrate. The energy we felt as our programs expanded was nothing short of wonderful. If the pandemic taught us anything, it taught us to be grateful for every time we get to gather with our neighbors and friends.
111 individual donors supported our mission in 2023. Every program that we started and manage is free and open to all. There are no fees to participate in any Be That Neighbor program, nor are there any requirements. Our motto is, “Just come!” Finding the money to pay the professionals who lead our program is part of our work. We start the programs, we find the very best professionals to lead our programs, we manage the programs, we find places for our programs to live, and we find the funding to make it all happen. It’s wonderful work and we love what we do.
2023 saw a resurgence of the Mill City Singers. Every week, I get 5-8 inquiries about how to join the singers. There are over 400 singers on our roster, with an average attendance of 57 singersl We performed at Capri Theater twice, and, as always, had the very best time in one of the best venues in Minneapolis. Singing in Loring Park and Apple Valley are favorite outings, and, of course, leading the singing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch at Target Field.
Yoga in the Park, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, on Saturday mornings in Gold Medal Park was wonderful. We were not rained this year, and averaged 52 practitioners. This is a simple and meaningful part of summer in our community.
We again sponsored National Night Out. Gold Medal Park was the location of this gathering of our community. This year we featured the Enso Taiko drumming group and everyone who attended were thrilled with the performance. We are so thankful to each of you who participated in this event to help solidify our community. The drummers are already committed to returning next year!
One of our proudest accomplishments was the launch of the video, ‘Be That Neighbor”. The music was composed by JD and Jevetta Steele, and Jevetta directed the video. Stay tuned for an exciting challenge centering around the video to be launched in 2024. If you haven’t seen it, please view it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W22_klFTVBQ.
Be That Neighbor is honored to partner with the Zahara Kathawalla Foundation. “The purpose of the ZKF is to honor Zahara’s legacy by awarding funding that supports young individuals on their path toward personal growth through broadened experiences and opportunities in three intersecting areas: education, cultural exploration, and wellness.” We look forward to 2024 and to new ways to partner with this neighborhood charity.
We also began a program of sponsoring artists to perform in the park. Barb and Eben Gillespie, Jaz Steele, and several recipients of the Sallie Steele Birdsong Scholarship sang there, as well as a puppet show from Open Eye Theater, and sharing free juice pops, water, and wildflower seeds to plant. Our hopes are to expand this program in the coming year.
We all agree that music is incredibly important in our daily lives, for health and for joy, and making sure that children have music in their lives as they grow and develop is even more important. The Sallie Steele Birdsong Scholarship, currently serving 13 very talented young people. It is designed to make sure that children get those music lessons when their families can’t afford them. We pay the teachers to give the lessons, and the joy it brings is obvious when you hear these singers sing. If you haven’t seen the video about this program, please watch it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLk3SJqYnrQ.
On September 21st with the support of MacPhail Center for Music, we were honored to host a benefit concert in Antonello Hall featuring the Steeles. Several of the Sallie Steele Birdsong Scholarship recipients helped us greet our guests and made sure everyone felt welcomed. The Steeles rocked the house and sent us home feeling optimistic and joyful. What else can you ask?
We continue to partner with the Cedar Riverside Athletics and Enrichment community organization. The dynamic young people who make this organization work are incredibly effective. From the founding of the first ever Youth Council to athletic activities to homework sessions to so much more, they are determined to change our city and be part of making the future brighter and better. We are so proud to work with these wonderful people and their fearless leader, Jennifer Weber.
2024 will be more . . .more singing, more yoga, more concerts, and so much more. There are some surprises coming and joy all around!
I am honored every day to work with the best board of directors. When Be that Neighbor began 9 years ago, we agreed on 2 things about the board. We have to like each other (which is easy) and we have to have different talents. It has made the running of this organization joyful and fun. I am grateful to co-founder, Dave Tinjum, who makes sure our message gets out to all of you. Jan Mershon makes sure we use her knowledge and expertise about how our community works. Susan Doherty is our grant writer and her experienced intelligence in all matters can’t be replicated. Jennifer Weber connects us to Cedar Riverside and makes sure we are a true community with our friends a few blocks away. JD Steele is our creative genius, directing the Mill City Singers, the Sallie Steele Birdsong Scholarship, and composing and arranging new music for us whenever the need arises. Chuck Geary is invaluable in raising money and helping us generate a plan for partnering with local businesses. I continue to do what I do best, have coffee, which is my joy. I am honored to meet so many of you, to learn from you and listen to you, and to discover what it means to support a community.
Nothing we do would be possible without the incredible generosity of our partners. We are so thankful to the Guthrie, to MacPhail, to Ten Thousand Things, to the Cedar Riverside Youth Council, to Gold Medal Park, to the Capri Theater, DMNA, E. A. Michaelson for their donation, to the Minnesota State Arts Board, to the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and to every one of our 90 individual donors. You make it all possible.
We thank you for your help and your continued support. Please ‘like’ Be That Neighbor on Facebook. All news and events are posted there as well as on our website, bethatneighbor.org. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors. For questions and comments, please contact me at cjkittock@gmail.com Donations can be made at https://www.givemn.org/organization/Be-That-Neighbor.
Good morning, Singers! I hope this email finds your holiday preparations well in hand.
We have only one more rehearsal for 2023 and it is Saturday, December 16, 2:00-3:30. You won't want to miss one more chance to sing with our community of Singers, to laugh together, and to exchange holiday wishes.
Please bring Christmas cookies to share, if you are so inclined. One more chance to celebrate together!
Thank you for all you do to make the Mill City Singers the dynamic and joyous group we are.
Claudia
Good morning, Singers! We have a performance, a potluck, and a rehearsal before the end of 2023. 2023 has been a wonderful year, and the only thing that could possibly be better is 2024.
The Kenwood Retirement Community has had to cancel our performance on Saturday due to illness in their community. That means we will rehearse at the Guthrie, 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor on Saturday, the 9th.
When we finish at the Guthrie, we will be meeting in the Community Room at the Legacy Condos on 1240 South 2nd St., Minneapolis. Please bring a dish to pass with a serving utensil and any beverage you want to drink. Water, plates, eating utensils, and napkins will be provided. The room is reserved through 5:30.
On Saturday, December 16th, we will be rehearsing on the 8th floor of the Guthrie, 2:00-3:30. It will be the last rehearsal until March 2nd so you will want to get your Mill City Singer 'fix' before our winter hiatus.
Thank you for everything you do to make the Singers the Singers. Every one of you make us stronger and we are so very thankful.
Good morning, Singers! I hope you all enjoyed your long holiday weekend. December is just 2 days away, and the Singers will be busy.
On December 2nd, we will be rehearsing on the 8th floor of the Guthrie at 2:00. At 2:30, we will be moving to the Endless Bridge to sing Christmas songs (lyrics sheets provided) as the audience leaves the matinee of 'A Christmas Carol'. We did this years ago and it was great fun. You will want to be there!
On December 9th, we will be singing at the Kenwood Retirement Community at 825 Summit Avenue, Minneapolis. There is on street parking and being there early will help that process. We will begin singing at 2:00. After we finish there, we will go to the Legacy Condo Community Room at 1240 South 2nd St. which is just down the street from the Guthrie. Please bring a dish to share and serving utensils. Be That Neighbor will provide plates, utensils, napkins, and bottled water. Our reservation is from 3:00-5:30. Please join us. It is always great fun and the food is fantastic!!
On December 16th, we will have our last rehearsal of 2023, 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor of the Guthrie. The plan is for Fred's choir to join us and we are hoping that some of you will bring Christmas cookies to share with our guests after the rehearsal. Stay tuned for more details.
Please remember to bring warm hats and mittens for the young people at Bryan Coyle. As we all know, being warm determines whether kids play outside during cold days. Thank you for your generosity in helping us make sure kids can play outside.
We are so grateful for all you do to make the Mill City Singers the fantastic community it is. Let's send 2023 out with a wonderful December of making music together.
Thank you!
Good morning, Singers!
Just a quick reminder that we will not be rehearsing this Saturday. Enjoy a long weekend with friends and family, and know that we are thankful for all you do to make the Singers the group we are. We are stronger because of each one of you.
Please read the newsletter on Saturday for all the latest news.
Enjoy!
